Mission:
The Mission of the Sterling Math & Science Foundation is to provide free and reduced-cost math and science related educational experiences for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds; and to develop and support programs that seek to keep students engaged in learning during the summer months to avoid regression in math and science and nurture an enthusiasm for these subjects.
History
In 2007, through a $15,000 gift from Adopt-A-School partner Vulcan Materials Company, the first STEM Summer Camp was held at Sterling Elementary School. Forty-two 3rd -5th grade students from Sterling attended a 3 week full day summer camp directed by Ruth Hood. Students were selected based upon the greatest need and interest in Science and Math. (see Media Release).
2008 and 2009 summer camps were funded by additional corporate and community partners who supported the mission of the camp and Sterling students. After an audit by CMS in 2010, it was recommended the summer camp organization, originally named “Sterling Elementary Math and Science Camp” undergo a transition to become an independent entity in name and functionality. During 2011 and 2012, the summer camp board revised their name and structure to its current status as a foundation.
In 2013 & 2015, the foundation awarded scholarships to 20 Sterling Rising 4th & 5th graders to attend the Agent Einstein Summer Camp held at Charlotte Preparatory School and in 2014 partnered with Kids-N-Technology to fund 20 3rd and 4th grade students to their summer camp which was held at Sterling Elementary School. The camps focused on learning through hands on projects, home assignments, and field trips to local businesses such as Vulcan Materials Pineville Quarry.
